Phone Longevity

How often you see people using a smartphone which was released like 4 or 5 years ago? You probably don’t see that often. This is usually because of two main reasons. One, because they might have broken their phone and the replacement cost of the parts are really high. The second reason is that basically your phone doesn't last that long.

For the former reason you can prevent that by handling the phone with extra care. But for the later reason you cannot do anything, or can you?

Yes, you can to an extent. The prime reasons behind why your phone doesn't last long are your battery and CPU. So what can you do about it? Let’s cover that in this post.

BATTERY

Let’s start with the battery first. As soon as the battery runs out you recharge your phone, this process is not entirely reversible. Every time you charge your phone it loses a certain percentage of its health. This is the reason why your phone drains out quicker as it ages. Below mentioned are the steps you can follow to protect your battery.

  • Keeping it out of the heat
  • Storing your phone with 50% battery
  • If using a wireless charger make sure your phone stays cool the entire period
  • Using fast charging only when necessary
  • Charge only till 80% instead of 100%

Although people might find it difficult to follow the last two steps. So the easier option would be to go with the phones with higher capacity battery.

CPU

CPU is another important factor that determines how long your phone lasts. A higher end CPU will give you a snappier experience, often brands selling phone at an appealing price use a lower end CPU and trumpet about their display and camera, and people fall for it. Most of the times people are okay with lower or mid range processors but over time it becomes sluggish. It’s not that your CPU wears out over time, it’s because apps are becoming more resource demanding. This does not mean that you should buy the latest and greatest CPU. Unlike your batteries which are replaceable your CPU is not. So while buying a phone pay attention to the CPU and look for a CPU with a good reputation, it’s definitely worth spending a little extra for a better CPU, which will last you longer.

CONCLUSION

So basically while buying a smartphone don't fall for the bells and whistle if you are planning on using the smartphone for an extended period rather pay attention to the actual specs which matter like the battery capacity and the processor inside. Rather you can use your smartphone as wish without thinking too much about the future, enjoy the time you have with it and later upgrade your phone when you feel it's time.
